Another ‘box seat’ disaster avoided … just!

The bitter, washed-up old hacks who compile the various columns that have made The Bug Australia’s No1 family newszine for decades very rarely gloat.

And for good reason, too, seeing they rarely have anything to gloat about. Especially our two media-review columns that have been totally unable over some years now to educate “sub-editors” at the Heralds in Sydney how to folio editions, i.e get pages numbers right!

But our sports columnists are all agloat right now after their recent post (link at bottom) that was absolutely spot on in scolding the ABC News Breakfast for declaring that Australia was “in the box seat” to win the second Test against South Africa, walking out for the third day’s play with the hosts struggling at 5 for 97 after two days ruined by rain.

Pictured at top and below is the St George’s ground in Port Elizabeth, highlighting the box seats the Australians left for that day’s play, and never to return.

Being in the “box seat” turned out to being beaten by an innings and 30 odd runs in what amounted to about three days playing time!

So you might think, given the massive readership of The Bug that’s often in the tens of tens, that sports commentators would wipe “in the box seat” from their repertoires.

But our sports compilers held their collective breaths last night when the caller of the Wallaroos/Scotland rugby union match declared the Aussies were “in the box seat” to win. They were leading at that stage by some four points with Scotland fighting back well and with quite a few minutes to go. Well, more than a few minutes seeing rugby union games can last up to three days if a side can put together 35, 243 phases after the full-time siren has sounded.

What could have easily turned out to be a calling blunder to match ABC News Breakfast’s effort did not eventuate but really? In the box seat although less than a converted try ahead? And we’ll also argue that the Wallaroos being a player short didn’t warrant the “box seat” offering. We still reckon “in the box seat” should be permanently put back in its box.

WHY FACT IS OFTEN STRANGER THAN FICTION: At the very moment our scribe typed that last “in the box seat” above, the ABC news radio announcer in the background used exactly those words in a sports roundup. Code not picked up.
