Courtesy of my spies up in the Mount Coot-tha studios of Channel 9 in Brisbane, I have some exciting news for some of our older music fans but not perhaps the small group that still watches A Current Affair.
And that news is that from tonight onwards, Nine News Queensland’s 6pm bulletin will run for an extra 15 minutes simply to make sure that newsroom can cover every exciting daily disclosure surrounding the reunion tour of local band Powerfinger. (Subs, please check their name as I’ve never heard of them. I think they had some success around the same time as Salad Garden).
The station’s news director told me on the condition on anonymity: “We’ve been all over this for a week, reporting on cryptic clues suggesting the band was reforming for a big tour Down Under, then confirmation of that tour going ahead in late 2027.
“We’ve then been beating other network on a more-or-less daily basis on tour dates likely to be added and how ticket sales are going and we’re determined to keep that edge. There’s still a helluva lot more to come on this amazing and developing story including lengthy interviews with band members and fans!
“The extra 15 minutes will still allow us to be the No.1 news bulletin in Queensland on days that other top news stories might break.”
All fantastic news, I guess, but those who still watch ACA will be disappointed that program’s running time will be reduced significantly.

Other gossip from my sources at Nine Entertainment Co, especially the Wide World of Sports team, is that they are expecting very healthy viewer numbers when the rugby league Not-Really-Much-of-the-World Cup kicks off tonight.
