Probe launched into SA missile deaths

ADELAIDE: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says federal authorities are working with the South Australian Government to identify the source of this morning’s fatal missile strikes on various locations on the state’s Eyre Peninsula and Riverland district.

Mr Albanese expressed his condolences to the families of the so-far unknown number of people who had lost their lives.

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said details were sketchy at present but he believed “several dozen people at minimum” had been killed in the missile attacks. (main image)

“Without fail all those killed have so far have been identified as agricultural scientists researching how to stem the spread of gazanias – those colourful yet highly invasive ground cover plants introduced into SA in the 1950s but which are now declared as weeds needing eradication.” (below)

Mr Malinauskas said initial reports from the scenes of the strikes suggested the weapons used were American-made intercontinental ballistic missiles and had been fired from somewhere in the Middle East.

“Our investigations are continuing,” Mr Malinauskas said.

BRISBANE: A range of community groups have complained to Queensland’s LNP Government over what they claim are the overly restrictive terms of reference of an inquiry into new laws covering breach of bail.

The Crisafulli Government has been conducting the inquiry into its new “breach bail, go to jail” bill introduced as part of its overall “adult crime, adult time” legislative package and the parliamentary committee examining the bill will hold its first public hearing in Brisbane today.

“We were more than prepared to front the inquiry today and give our views on the new laws,” said one peak body leader who did not wish to be identified.

“But the terms of reference are so restrictive that we feel we can’t make the points we would like to make to the committee, so we won’t be appearing today.

“The committee is insisting that all submissions be in the form of a haiku, or even a couplet or quatrain, which we think don’t provide the scope we need to mount our arguments.”

The peak body officer said their organisation had considered submitting a limerick to the inquiry but even that had been specifically rule out under the terms of reference as being “far too long”.

SURFERS PARADISE: Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate, has mounted a new argument in the war of words over his disputed claim that he wined and dined with US President Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida earlier this year.

Mr Tate erupted and swore at a news conference earlier this week and walked out on reporters under questioning about his claim and the release of a White House statement claiming the Mayor had not shared a meal with Mr Trump. (below)

But in a change of tactic today Cr Tate fronted another news conference to declare: “Trump’s a fucking liar. Everyone knows that. So why would anyone believe what a sleazy, oleaginous, loud-mouthed, ceaselessly self-promoting politician say?”
