DALLAS TX: US President Donald Trump has clarified the commitment he made at the Republican Party’s mid-term convention in Dallas to give every adult American US$5,000 if the party wins a majority in both houses of Congress at November’s mid-term elections.

The commitment was the major news item emerging from what observers said was a somewhat lacklustre event compared with the much bigger and more important four-yearly presidential nominating conventions. (main picture)

Under questioning by reporters the President said the nation could afford the US $1.5 trillion bill.

“Quiet! Quiet piggy,” Mr Trump yelled at reporters who at the time were not speaking at all.

“You are not considering the second part of my promise which I didn’t have time to expand on when I spoke at this magnificent convention.”

Mr Trump then spent the next two hours lauding his own speech, repeating many sections of it, and claiming that the Dallas event had broken world records for attendance figures.

“The other part of my policy is that if the Republican Party doesn’t win a majority in both houses, then more than 340 million Americans will need to pay me $5,000,” he explained.

“By that I mean they personally will need to send me – that’s me personally, not the government – $5,000 as a kind of fine for not giving me a majority in both houses. So it’s very fair. Very fair,” he said.

Also at the Republican Party convention Vice-President JD Vance refused to deny he had personally designed one of President Trump’s few public appearances while in Dallas.

Mr Vance went only as far as saying he had been “somewhat involved” in the planning for a presidential motorcade through the city.

“I thought Texans would love to see Donald Trump up close so I insisted he ride in an open-top limo, and I also thought that as a property developer he would love to see up close some historic buildings, like the city’s Book Depository Building at Dealey Plaza,” Mr Vance said.

“So I insisted that the motorcade route take in those sites and drive very, very slowly past them. That’s all I did.”

But when pressed, the Vice-President also took responsibility for the advertising of the motorcade route including notices urging Texans to promote their Second Amendment rights by bringing rifles or handguns with them to see the President.

“Texas is a so-called open-carry state where it’s (sic) citizens are allowed to carry firearms in public as long as they have permits, so there’s nothing wrong with that,” Mr Vance said.

He refused to answer further questions about sidewalk stalls handing out ammunition and fully loaded rifles for free in and around Dealey Plaza.
