Firstly, an explanation. The two images depicted above are not what was shown at the start of Nine News Queensland’s 6pm bulletin last night (Tuesday).

This is in fact what was on screen as newsreader Joel Dry kicked off the night’s big stories with this rather innocuous lead-in: “Mushroom killer Erin Patterson approved for taxpayer-funded Ozempic in jail…”

OZEMPIC OUTRAGE leaves a lasting impression though, doesn’t it?

When the yarn by reporter Penelope Liersch appeared, newsreader Melissa Downes introduced it with a rather bland “…[Patterson] has ignited debate about prisoners being granted weight-loss jabs…”

But that didn’t stop our graphics guy or gal carrying on with their love of alliteration…

The compilers of MGH have no problem with JAIL JABS. Our heading at top shows we also love a little bit of alliteration. It’s the bullshit bias that OZEMPIC OUTRAGE creates that pisses off our crew who suspect it is done on purpose.

Here’s one definition of outrage in case anyone claiming to be a journalist at Nine News isn’t sure about it.

So, let’s roll the tape on Penelope’s report, concentrating on anyone speaking to camera. We have an unidentified woman saying these (giving prisoners pills) “are medical decisions”. No outrage there.

Next is Victorian shadow police minister Brad Battin, commendably controlling any outrage he might be feeling when, during a five-second appearance, he said that if [Patterson] “chose not to do exercise then we shouldn’t be subsidising costly medicines to keep her weight down”. A softly spoken contribution where he might have not considered the possibility that Patterson was too fat to exercise but no OUTRAGE there!

We then have some unnamed bloke stating that serving prisoners are entitled to the same treatment afforded anyone in the general community. He obviously isn’t outraged because Patterson has been granted that treatment. The latest prisoner to have been approved for Ozempic, as the reporter also explained.

Next up is some unnamed woman who boldly but calmly declares: “It certainly won’t happen under a government I lead”. Maybe she didn’t need identification, seeing it was the Victorian Opposition Leader saying exactly what you would expect her to say with a state election looming.

We are then back to that bloke, now identified as Brett Collins from Justice Action, adding that Patterson deserved to be treated fairly considering the stress she is under in isolation that would exacerbate any existing medical condition. Might also make it hard for her in her current obese condition to walk the quadrangle for some exercise as she releases dirt from under her prison garb? We added that bit; not Brett.

A quick recap. No outrage apparent so far. Just a banner/slogan/prop that would appear solely designed to beat up a yarn to billyO to inflame public dislike for this terrible crook of a cook.

And let’s give the Victorian Premier the last words: “… when there is a coronial investigation into a death in prison, that a government takes in seriously”. He was referring to something the reporter had just explained: that a death in a Victorian prison had led to inmates being afforded weight-loss treatment.

And do you want to know what makes it even sadder that this sort of overblown bias in the words on screen is often used by Nine News to brainwash viewers and leave something in their memories before they drift away?

That our MGH compiler who first saw the “OZEMPIC OUTRAGE” words couldn’t watch the rest of the bulletin as it was his turn to hitch up his trailer and go down to the local bottleO and pick up the MGH unit’s daily supplies of Bundy Rum and Coke. He had to wait until this morning to check the bulletin on 9now and file this yarn but he knew exactly how it would pan out on replay and he wasn’t the least bit surprised or disappointed.

If Nine News was the only one that does shit like this!
