Plans for a new Bug Media Glass House annual award for the very worst in Australia’s mainstream mediocre have been scrapped due to rising costs of producing a trophy befitting of the dishonour.

Also considered was the high cost already inflicted on Australia’s No1 family newszine’s limited financial resources for the cost blowout of another media award struck just recently, The Bill Shorten Zinger of the Year trophy.

“As we found with that trophy, even when its circular backboard was made in balsa wood painted in gold paint and with a pine base given its own paint job to make it look like the grain of an endangered Australian native red hardwood, it cost us a motza,” a Bug editorial executive explained.

“Which means we’ve had to scuttle what would have been an exciting addition to our entire range of media awards – The Stating the Bleeding Obvious Annual Trophy for our Fourth Estaters.

“Still, we’d like to thank Nine News Queensland newsreader Joel Dry who was the inspiration for the new gong for his segment last Tuesday night where he said of a white humpback whale calf spotted off Stradbroke Island with its mum: “..and while it’s not the world-famous Migaloo” it was one of only a dozen white whales in the Southern Hemisphere.

Given Nine News’s viewer democracy, The Bug suspected that the bulletin’s audience was dying – well, that’s a given – to have a huge giggle over the very notion that they had to be assured a baby whale calf was not Migaloo, who, if he was still alive and around 30 years old, would weight up to 40 tonnes.

Sadly, Nine News’s elderly audience would know that a Japanese whaler got Migaloo in mid-2014 and tiny strips of him continue to be a very popular, albeit also a very expensive, special-occasion offering at top-shelf sushi restaurants in Tokyo and other major Japanese cities.
