WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump is still just part-way through a speech marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Mr Trump began speaking at midday yesterday, Independence Day 4th of July, (2am today AEST) at the Great American State Fair on the Washington Mall. (main picture)
In the first eight hours of his speech as today’s edition of The Bug was being published, Mr Trump has talked up the Fair which has drawn criticism for its low attendance attributed to its blatant pro-Trump slant.
“The fake news media will tell you nobody is attending the Fair,” Mr Trump said, adding that he had probably at least another eight or nine more hours to speak.
“This is the biggest crowd in world history to attend any event anywhere on the face of the earth, even my first inauguration,” he said while waving his arm at an obviously largely empty Mall.
“It’s estimated that at least 400 million people have attended this great event so far, with around 20 million here today alone,” he added, citing a total figure larger than the entire population of the USA.
The President’s patently misleading claims about the crowd size were echoed by the Murdoch-owned Fox News Network but with one exception.
Fox News anchor, Sean Hannity, (below) who has been helming live 24/7 coverage of the event, caused his fellow hosts to gasp when he appeared to question the figure of 400 million attendees cited by the President.

“That’s just not correct,” he said.
“I put it at more than 500 million,” he added to the relief of his co-hosts.
In an unprecedented move, Mr Trump’s speech was accompanied in the Fox Network coverage by split-screen advertisements urging viewers to buy his cryptocurrency and meme coins.
Meanwhile, a group of American musicians who pulled out of previously scheduled appearances at the Great American State Fair because of its pro-Trump nature have instead been appearing at the six-day funeral of the nation’s political and spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed four months ago in a US and Israeli missile strike at the start of their war against Iran. Acts such as Young MC, Morris Day, the Time, C+C Music Factory, Flo Rida, Poison, Martina McBride, the Commodores, and Milli Vanilli released a joint statement explaining their appearance in Tehran.
“We all weighed up whether to appear in Washington or Tehran and we all came to the same conclusion that when it comes to far-right, oppressive, anti-democratic, corrupt regimes and their leaders, Iran and the late Ayatollah are the lesser of two evils,” the statement said.
