For only the (subs, check how often this had happened) time, The Bug’s Media Glass House Arse-licker trophy for June has been awarded not to an individual for their ringmastery but collectively, this time to just about the entire Canbera press gallery present at Senator Aunty Pauline Hanson’s recent National Press Club address.
Our ALOTM judges couldn’t even begin to count the number of media owners’ rectums that were being given an almighty virtual tongue-in-groove cleaning as they sat silently as Aunty Pauline tore strips off Guardian Australia’s reporter Sarah Martin for having the temerity to ask a question about who gave the Senator’s daughter a job that she doesn’t appear to be doing.
The national leader of the White Indigenous One Nation people, her voice all a’quiver and wavering more than usual, branded Martin a “trashy journalist”, one “obsessed with constantly trying to put down me, my party and Mrs Rinehart “.(One Nation’s owner Gina Rinhart).
One of The Bug’s MGH ALOTM judges revealed his panel of seven bitter and washed up retired hacks were in awe as the rest of the Canberra political press mob remained silent as Aunty Pauline told Martin: “You don’t research properly, you don’t know your information and you will put out lies against me.”
And remained so as the One Nation leader declared that Martin was banned from any future media calls of hers.
Our judge again: “Although the room remained silent, you could almost hear all the political journos’ brains whirring away, far more concerned about how their stories could come across as being balanced and fair if they included some minor criticisms of Hanson’s performance while largely lauding her political ascendancy, her pitch-perfect policy platform all aimed at improving the lot of her beloved fellow battlers, and her seemingly inevitable but totally understandable surge towards The Lodge, despite her policies making Peter Dutton’s lazy, arrogant and uncosted push for power in 2025 that’s left the LNP on life support seem perfectly fair, logical and affordable. No wonder they were distracted while Martin was being attacked.
Another of our judges: “We lost count of the number of media barons’ and senior Australian print and electronic media executives who were having their muckholes massaged in such a magnificent way through the Canberra galley’s refusal to stand up and back their Guardian colleague, as later demanded by the national journalists’ union. Good luck with that.
“The likes of Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch and Kerry Stokes and whoever currently owns the Ten Network won’t need dunny paper for quite a while after this performance by so many senior scribes rimming with confidence and Gina Rinehart doesn’t wipe her own arse anyway, leaving that to staffers who can reach it.”
