CANBERRA: Former Midnight Oil frontman and former federal environment minister, Peter Garrett, has undertaken his first task in his new role of leading an inquiry into the purchase of new nuclear submarines under the AUKUS deal.
Mr Garrett is due to be announced today as the new inquiry’s head (below) following weekend news that the first instalment of AUKUS submarines would comprise three used Virginia-class subs.

The Albanese Government had been expected to buy an initial two second-hand US subs and one brand-new boat under the deal.
But on Saturday Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Richard Marles, said three used subs would join the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet prior to Australian-made boats coming on line under the AUKUS deal “in the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive”.
Today in Canberra Mr Garrett revealed his previously unknown skills as an AUSLAN translator to help Mr Marles clarify his message about the changes to the AUKUS deal. (below)
