Quality journalism’s near-misses

The column that has fun with the smaller mistakes and missteps of Australia’s mainstream mediocre; that pays homage to those sweet little fishes that individually don’t amount to a full meal but collectively can cause a tummy upset over the overall state of the once great and noble craft of journalism in this country.

The Today show on Nine a few days back had a yarn of some traffic accidents on a “rich” Gold Coast street. Reporter Mia Glover used the same story on Nine News Queensland that night.

Each segment spent a lot of time showing video after video of a number of what they called near-misses, including the featured one above that’s also shown below.

Here’s the problem. Our alert Mediocre Bytes compilers – someone had lost the key to the bar fridge – realised fairly quickly these weren’t near misses. Well, not according to their understanding of the word.

To a man and a woman, they thought the cyclist clearly had a hit, rather than a near-miss. Here was an accident not avoided.

As with all the other video they ran with….

We won’t even bother with trying to understand why these reckless, careless, cyclists were in a rich suburb in the first place. Or should that have been the story’s lead/lede: bloody hooligans not knowing their rightful place?
