OZ POLITICS: North Queensland federal MP George Christensen is believed to be in line for a rare retraction and apology from News Corp Australia for claims published in some of its outlets today.
Several Sunday newspapers across Australia carried a story saying Mr Chistensen, the LNP MP for Dawson, had started a new account on the Gab social media platform, a popular choice for some users following the decision by Twitter to ban US President Donald Trump.
The story described Gab as the “go-to social media platform for neo-Nazis, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and right-wing extremists”.
A spokesperson for Mr Christensen said the MP had complained to News Corp as soon as he saw the story because it just wasn’t fair or balanced and reflected badly on him.
“Even George was surprised at how quickly News Corp agreed to run a retraction and print an apology,” the spokesperson said.
“All he had to do was point out that Twitter and indeed all social media platforms, not just Gab, were also the ‘go-to’ sites for neo-Nazis, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and right-wing extremists, and they caved.
“He was going to sue but now he’ll settle for the apology. After all the story was very lopsided and unbalanced – something we should all never tolerate.”
