Pope stays shtum on new Pell claims

THE PELL CASE:

ROME: Pope Francis has refused to comment on new allegations against Cardinal George Pell alleging sex offences involving young boys in the 1970s.

The claim were aired by the ABC in its series on child abuse within the Catholic Church in Australia.

This week’s episode of the Revelation series fronted by senior ABC reporter Sarah Ferguson included two new claims against Pell by men who claim Pell sexually assaulted them while posted at Ballarat in Victoria.

The Bug contacted the Vatican to ask if Pope Francis would be commenting on the allegations which precede a decision by the High Court of Australia on Pell’s appeal against earlier court rulings on other paedophilia charges.

A Vatican spokesperson said His Holiness would not be commenting.

“The Holy Father is aware of the allegations in the ABC program,” the spokesperson said.

“But he is also aware that your country’s High Court is soon to hand down its decision in Cardinal Pell’s appeal.

“So he isn’t in any position to make any comment or take any position on Cardinal Pell’s guilt or innocence in these matters.

“As His Holiness says, he really is between a rock spider and hard place on this one,” he said.
