ISRAELI POLITICS:
TEL AVIV: Benjamin Netanyahu, currently Israel’s caretaker Prime Minister, (main picture) says he hopes the democratic process is allowed to play out in the wake of the recent Israeli election and has reminded the nation that he is “still in charge” until any new government is formed.
Mr Netanyahu said in the meantime he still had a role and responsibility to respond to the flood emergency in Gaza. (below)

“I recognise that President Isaac Herzog has asked my election opponent Gadi Eisenkot to try to put together a new coalition government, but I am still in charge until that doesn’t happen,” Mr Netanyahu said. “I mean, anything could happen. Right?
“Hamas terrorists – especially those very young ones, the toddlers and pre-schoolers that aren’t among the 20,000 or so that we so far eliminated in Gaza – might attack our President or even Mr Eisenkot in a strategic and surgical missile strike.
“Both men might, God forbid, be injured and left unable to fulfil their roles or better still … I mean, or worse, killed. Just saying,” he said.
Mr Netanyahu added that even in the caretaker period he retained extensive powers.
“I am pleased to say that in an emergency I am not restricted by caretaker conventions,” Mr Netanyahu said.
“So it is possible for me to issues orders to government and military and emergency services personnel and to use powers available to me to respond to the current flooding crisis.
“To that end I have ordered Israel’s National Emergency Authority (NEMA) to mobilise as many water tanker trucks as possible and send them into Gaza and release their loads into what used to be the streets there.
“In addition I have ordered NEMA to have as many firefighting aircraft and helicopters filled to capacity and flown over Gaza to empty their tanks.
“The IDF will also mobilise immediately to construct emergency pipelines from several of the Mediterranean Sea beaches in Gaza to pump seawater into the area.
“I am safe in doing all of these things even in caretaker mode because none of them is a departure from my government’s longstanding Gaza policies,” he said.
