Oh, to be brazen and freakish at the same time!

The column that has fun with the smaller mistakes and missteps of Australia’s mainstream mediocre; that pays homage to those sweet little fishes that individually don’t amount to a full meal but collectively can cause a tummy upset over the overall state of the once great and noble craft of journalism in this country.

Is it possibly to do something brazeningly if you were unaware that you didn’t know enough about something to be rather brazen about it to begin with?

Huh! That’s the deep philosophical question that flowed from the rum-flavoured lips of our Mediocre Bytes compilers as they watched Nine News Queensland’s 6pm bulletin last night (Tuesday).

What first caught their attention was newsreader Melissa Downes’s introduction to the report of a driver being pinged for high-range speeding near Cairns: “See the moment a brazen driver overtakes an unmarked police car …”

“What the fuck’s brazen about that if the fucking cop car was unmarked?” one of our coarser compilers finally managed to blurt out after sending a spray of Bundy rum and Bundy rum across the room.

The Nine News reporter’s take that followed made no mention of “brazen” at all, which was pretty sensible seeing the key word “unmarked” had so quickly doused images in what’s left of our compilers’ minds of the driver flipping the bird and shouting “Fuck youse coppers!” as he roared past and pushed the pedal even closer to the metal.

That’s if he would have had time to glance over and brake quickly – and only if the cops inside were in uniform, of course? Maybe they were, and grinning ear-to-ear so perhaps our lead-footed driver was indeed rather brazen as he decided to continue hurtling towards a fine of almost $2000 and eight demerit points?

At least the newsroom’s graphic artist steered (sorry!) away from using “brazen”! But MB will continue to fathom exactly what mistake the driver made. Not looking sideways?

Let’s stay with that Nine News bulletin and get just a little bit picky – as we sometimes might be accused of being – to ponder why some Aussie thunderstorms are so freakish.

A lot of Aussie thunderstorms are fierce, just like the violent band that messed with Alice Springs. How would youse BUGgers out there like to be labelled as a freak if you were the very best among your peers of doing something very, very well instead of just in a normal, typical, average or ordinary manner?

The compilers of The Bug‘s media-review platforms – this one and Media Glass House – just feel that FREAK STORM should go the way of HORROR CRASH and HEART-STOPPING VISION and anything that really happening that was nevertheless INCREDIBLE!.

We now grab the remote and switch over quickly to today’s (Wednesday’s) edition of the ABC’s News Breakfast to present yet the latest example of “alleged” or “allegedly” being overused, underused or misused.

People are charged with offences and there’s nothing alleged about that.
