Missing X mark spotted!

The column that has fun with the smaller mistakes and missteps of Australia’s mainstream mediocre; that pays homage to those sweet little fishes that individually don’t amount to a full meal but collectively can cause a tummy upset over the overall state of the once great and noble craft of journalism in this country.

Not sure whether we’ve ever explained why the bitter and twisted, washed-up, hacks who compile our real-media-watch columns find it so hard to file on Sundays?

The grim-reaping reality is that most of them are quite old, are increasingly aware of their end day not far away, and have started to hedge their bets by attending a number of church services on the Sabbath, covering a range of Christian and other faiths. It truly leaves fuck-all time for writing stuff.

Which probably explains this hastily cobbled-together edition of MB, featuring mistakes that our compilers over the journey have openly admitted could be described as picky! picky! picky!

But are they? Let’s start with a look back at ABC’s 7pm Queensland news bulletin from Friday when Jessica van Vonderen introduced a segment on Earl Spencer’s soon-to-be-released book on his sister, Lady Di, including his claim that tampon replacement volunteer – sorry! … the then Prince Charles – had sounded “giddily elated” on hearing the news of “his wife’s death almost 30 years ago”.

Not right. When poor Di became an ex-human being in that Paris car tunnel (some cruel people at the time said she was as dead as a Dodi), she was already divorced from Jug Ears. She was the plant communicator’s ex-wife. Two tiny letters to be accurate; it’s not rocket surgery, is it?

Feels a bit bad and sad to pick on poor, old, Aunty, again but let’s now look at today’s (Sunday’s) edition of ABC Weekend Breakfast where Patricia Karvelas was touting Insiders and declaring that One Nation had “refuted” claims that its zero immigration policy would tank the Australian economy.

We’re not sure who shared the newsroom when PK began her journalism career but our compilers can’t believe she wouldn’t have had it drummed into her by first week’s end that refute means to to prove that a statement, theory, claim, or person is wrong or false using evidence, facts, or logic. The word needed was claimed! Or rejected. It’s not rocket surgery, is it?

Let’s go commercial now and we thank former The Courier-Mail ace rugby-league reporter and Lang Park media hall of famer Barry Dick for this little dig at his employer of close to 80 years.

Maybe our compilers who are now fiercely devoted to various Christian faiths, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism among others, should now check The Sunday Mail to see if they got the teams and the final score right in last night’s AFL clash between the Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn?
