Close but no cigar!

More fools all youse BUGgers out there if you think we at the MGH have decided our years-long campaign to get “sub-editors” at the Herald mastheads to folio their editions properly has finally been won.

It is true that in recent weeks those “subs” have been pretty good, and no-one has yet to fuck up by declaring that a story that overflows from page 3 – the fake inside cover whenever there’s a wraparound – has originated from page one … WRONG! … or the front page … WRONG! … or the cover page …… WRONG!

A few weeks back, we thought the powers-that-be at The Sydney Morning Herald had worked out the perfect solution seeing their staff have always seemed perfectly incapable of doing the right thing for any length of time. And that was to have no stories on page 3 continued inside the book! Hadn’t ever seen that before but Simples!

But no. Editions since have had page 3 yarns continued inside, and even today’s (Thursday’s) Herald has two that they’ve rightly subbed as coming from …. drum roll please! PAGE 3. RIGHT!

So why has one of those stories upset our MGH compilers just a little today. Getting folios wrongs is a big no-no in sub-editing, as is alerting readers that a front-of-book story has flowed to THE WRONG PAGE!

Oh dear! Page 14 ….Page 15. Not much of a dif! As we said at the top, close but no cigar!
