CANBERRA: The death of American country music star Dolly Parton has sparked a leadership challenge to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese initiated by female members of the Labor Party’s federal caucus.
The challenge was revealed following Mr Albanese’s appearance at a breakfast event in the national capital this morning.
After he finished his remarks the Prime Minister was asked if he wished to make a comment on Dolly Parton.
Unaware at the time of the music legend’s death, Mr Albanese recounted his role as transport minister in 2011 when he gave special dispensation for Ms Parton’s oversized tour bus to be imported for use on Australian roads as part of her national tour.
“Speaking of oversized,” Mr Albanese continued while cupping and waving his hands in front of his chest. (main picture)
“She brought with her two melons… no, watermelons, as you do!” he added to gasps from the audience.
At that point an aide rushed Mr Albanese from the stage and into his official C1 limousine and sped away to Parliament House.
Soon after a statement was issued by all female federal Labor MPs saying: “Enough is enough. The Prime Minister has to go.”
The statement continued, quoting several senior women ministers including Senator Penny Wong, Tanya Plibersek, and Senator Katy Gallagher saying: “We’re not going to front the cameras this time and mop up for him. He’s on his own this time.
“Not only that, he’s on his way out too,” the statement said. It did not specify who would be challenging Mr Albanese.
The Bug has sought comment from the Prime Minister.
