CANBERRA: Veteran federal MP, Bob Katter Junior, is set to make a splash at tonight’s Midwinter Ball in Canberra but One Nation leader, Senator Pauline Hanson, has made a last-minute decision to boycott the event.
The annual fundraising ball in the Great Hall of Parliament House is organised by the Federal Parliamentary Media Gallery and is widely regarded as the nation’s capital’s night of nights.
And doesn’t that indicate what a colourless, bland, mindlessly boring, insular dump Canberra is? (Note to subs: You might want to reword or remove this line before publication.)
Mr Katter this morning gave the media a preview of his outfit which he said was provided to him free of charge. (main picture)
“A very talented young man studying fashion design at a TAFE college in my electorate offered to kit me out for the ball in something he said should make a statement about inclusion and acceptance,” he explained.
“This is very important in the current climate when everyone is discussing immigration, even me who has no history of immigration in their family tree, especially not from Lebanon.
“The young chap stressed the need for ‘pride’ and acceptance of different ‘lifestyles’ when convincing me to wear one of his creations.
“So I am very happy to showcase a local designer’s efforts although I have chosen my own footwear for tonight.
“I’ll be wearing a pair of crocs tonight. Not the Crocs you might be familiar with, but a real pair of crocs – baby ones that have been gutted and tanned.”
One Nation leader, Senator Pauline Hanson, said she had decided just this morning to boycott the Midwinter Ball because it promoted a “woke and left-wing agenda”.
“I made up my mind not to go as a protest once I re-read the invitation which said the ball was a black tie event,” she said. “What’s wrong with a white tie event?
“Besides, I got the clear message that I would not get through the doors tonight if I wore a burqa as I planned to do. So I’m not going.”
Recently installed federal president of the Liberal Party, Tony Abbott, said he would be heading to the ball tonight as a guest of his party’s federal leader.
“I just can’t recall who that is at the moment but I’m grateful for the ticket and for him, or her, choosing my wardrobe for the ball,” Mr Abbott said. (below)

A spokesperson for, Lord Downer of Adelaide Hills, said the former Liberal leader had purchased a ticket to the ball.
“His Lordship will be going tonight but will not be partaking in festivities,” the spokesperson said.
“Instead he plans to sit quietly but in a prominent part of the Great Hall because he remains in mourning (below) for the demise of the political ambitions of his daughter, Countess Lady Georgina Downer.

“Lord Downer is determined to ensure that the movers and shakers in Canberra get the message that he is very, very disappointed that they have not yet found Lady Georgina a safe federal seat, or even better, a sinecure in the Senate for life or, if possible, a hereditary position she can pass on to coming generations of His Lordship’s family.”
Former prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, said he would be attending tonight’s event and would be “going casual”.
“I’ll just be throwing on the rags I generally wear around my harbourside mansion when relaxing at home,” he said. (below)

Ex-Network Nine breakfast host, Karl Stefanovic, would not divulge his wardrobe for this evening’s big event. But he did say it would feature a brown shirt.
