Nothing certain in life except “death taxes” scare

The Bug’s two media-focussed columns – this edition of Media Glass House and its sibling Mediocre Bytes – have often boasted that their constant blowtorch on Australia’s mainstream media outstrips the efforts of the ABC’s Media Watch.

That might be true but it’s also rather meaningless. A TV program has a lot of lead time to deal with before anything hits our Monday night TV screens. We also accept we simply do not have the resources to do the more in-depth analysis that Linton “The Block” Besser shares with us each Monday night.

But doing a bit more in-depth research than normal was one of the reasons why this column was first penned last Saturday but kept on hold. As you can see from the feature image (at top and below) we were out of the blocks just about as early as you can be to take a swipe at The Sydney Morning Herald splash from last Friday, May 22.

But because it’s fruit for the sideboard to expose the giant dump on Labor’s Budget that most if not all the MSM has been more than willing to engage in, happily magnifying the criticisms of young upstarts … sorry, start ups … and often rich investors who stand to lose out of the government’s capital gains tax and negative gearing changes, we were keen to pivot to another long-standing bitch of ours – why the fuck do Australian Broadcasting Corporation journos always look across at their commercial rivals and think their approach to political reporting has fuck-all anything to do with professional journalism?

A SMH sub has worked hard in our view to insert an Opposition slogan into that heading and he can beforgiven for that. He or she does, after all, work under the umbrella of an overall company – Nine Entertainment Co.-who saw nothing wrong with hosting a Liberal Party fundraising at the home of Nine’s TV Sydney news room.

We’ve looked at all the criticisms of the Budget and there’s no doubt that some of it is might be unfair, but most of the experts think that over all, the government should at least get some praise for trying to curb unfair tax advantages for the privileged and give young people a chance at home ownership. Others rightly slammed the Opposition’s “death tax” scare as nonsense even though, like the SMH sub mentioned above, you can’t blame them for trying as the Liberal Party strives to survive. It’s worked in the past for them. Just ask Bill Shorten.

Anywho, we have conducted what we joking refer to an indepth analysis of topics that fire up the sadsacks who compile this column. Has the ABC been fair and balanced these past few weeks, or have they put the eggbeater through, or worn the copycat glasses over, the commercial sector’s daily reporting of businesses that will go broke because of Labor’s changes and the Up-Starts threatening (we could say promising) to leave Australia and live in Ireland or India or Mars to survive and prosper?

We’ll share with you that research tomorrow!

TO BE CONTINUED: And please get onto iview and watch Monday’s Media Watch. Besser’s evisceration of the commercial sector’s attempt to paint the image of an entire nation about to collapse because of Labor’s broken promises is simply brilliant. At least someone at the ABC can spot bullshit
