Trump plans West Wing demolition

WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump says the weekend killing by Secret Service agents of an armed man near the White House proves the need for a “brand new, big beautiful” West Wing at his official residence.

Mr Trump today unveiled plans for the demolition of the historic West Wing and its replacement by a new 12-storey oval-shaped office block. (main picture)

He said the project would be an extension of his plans for constructing a large ballroom on the site of the demolished East Wing.

“As you can see, I have also had a rethink about the design of the ballroom,” he told reporters at a White House briefing.

“The new eastern ballroom will be increased in height to give the Secret Service better oversight of the grounds and surrounds.

“A brand new big beautiful West Wing will match the ballroom in height at 12 storeys and will reflect the Oval Office shape. My office itself will be expanded to cover an entire floor with a ceiling height of at least three storeys. The rest will be offices for my staff as well as a six-star Trump Hotel.

“The new buildings will now be built from solid gold instead of white marble, so there’ll be a slight rise in cost, probably to around $4 billion… each. But I think it is worth it.

“I have said that the ballroom was needed for security reasons and the weekend events show how Right I am, … I mean how right I am.

“While the original ballroom design would have enabled the Secret Service to keep watch from its roof over that side of the White House, the western side had no such protection.

“The weekend shooter came at me from the western side of the grounds so that proves we also need another big beautiful building on that side to provide the Secret Service with the same vantage point to protect me.

“My revised plans deliver that while retaining the most historic elements of the White House which, as I have previously indicated, will itself also be clad in solid gold and renamed the Donald J Trump Gold House.

“But that’s not something I’m rushing into just yet. Well certainly not in this term of office.”

Musing about the weekend incident President Trump said it was only luck that he was in the White House at the time of the shooting.

“I’m normally not in the White House most weekends,” he said. “Usually I am not here because I have so many important jobs to do. But I had the weekend totally free – no pesky engagements of any kind.

“One of my sons – I forget which one – wanted me to do something, somewhere at the weekend but I got out of that one pretty fast,” he added.
