Liberal bungle mars Remembrance Day

CANBERRA: An embarrassing slip-up by the Liberal Party has overshadowed formal Remembrance Day events in the national capital.

A Liberal Party source said the bungle had unnecessarily embarrassed current federal Opposition Leader Ssussan Ley.

“This morning, in what has become a tradition on Remembrance Day in recent years, all federal Liberal and National party MPs attended a special ceremony at the Australian War Memorial to pay their respects to those who have fallen in the Coalition Climate Wars,” the source said.

“The annual event is held at a dedicated pantheon of white marble busts of party leaders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of battling non-existent climate change.

“But when MPs started arriving this morning they noticed an extra marble bust had already been added to the memorial.

“It seems someone in the party ordered the new bust and had it installed, rationalising that Christmas was looming and the decision needed to be made quickly otherwise it might be well into the new year before a change to the memorial could occur.

“One quick-thinking MP who was among the earlier arrivals found an old cardboard box and covered up the new bust as best he could. (main picture)

“So hopefully nobody noticed, although Ssussan looked a bit uncomfortable when she stepped forward and laid her wreath.

“Her discomfort visibly turned to outright annoyance when Nats such as Barnaby Joyce, Matt Canavan, and some in Liberal ranks like Senator Sarah Henderson, and Andrew Hastie were loudly talking among themselves during what was meant to be a minute’s silence for the fallen,” the Liberal Party source said.
