Ley stands by Dunkley tactics

The federal Liberal Party deputy leader Sussan Ley says she is pleased with her tactics in attempting to scare voters on the eve of yesterday’s Dunkley by-election in Victoria.

At a news conference today attended by Opposition Leader Peter Dutton (main picture) Ms Ley defended her messaging on social media attempting to frighten voters about asylum seekers freed from detention by a High Court ruling last year.

She said she would continue using such tactics as the 2025 federal election approached while denying she was engaging in “dog whistle” politics.

“I’m not going to throw in the towel. Heads wiser than mine suggest this is a big issue in the community,” she said.

Mr Dutton said he was more than pleased with the Dunkley result.

“Last night Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party failed to secure a significant swing against them as is expected in by-elections ,” Mr Dutton said.

“This is yet another instance of Mr Albanese not living up to community expectations.”

US President Joe Biden has corrected statements he made confusing Gaza and Ukraine when he was announcing the delivery of US aid to Palestinians suffering in Israel’s war against Hamas.

During a meeting in the Oval Office with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Mr Biden mistakenly said the US was making air drops into Ukraine.

Within hours reporters were invited back to the Oval Office where Mr Biden attempted to correct the record.

“Whenever a President speaks on foreign policy matters he needs to be very precise, especially when dealing with matters involving war,” he said.

“What was said earlier today didn’t meet that standard so I want everyone to know that I will do all I can to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“To that end I’ll be speaking directly to Mr Roosevelt to ensure he doesn’t repeat that mistake,” Mr Biden said.

Famed Italian music producer and composer Giorgio Moroder (below) said he is mystified by a late night phone call he received from a man claiming to be US President Joe Biden.

Mr Moroder said the caller sounded a lot like Biden.

“His call woke me up and then he apologised for any embarrassment he had caused me before asking if I had seen Silvio Berlusconi lately?

“I informed him that Silvio died last year, then he asked me to pass on his best wishes to Silvio and hung up,” Mr Moroder said.
