PM reissues denials

FEDERAL POLITICS:

CANBERRA: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been forced to deny that he played the race card and peddled a scare about Muslims in his bid to wrest the Liberal Party nomination from the Lebanese-Australian businessman who had been overwhelmingly chosen in a local plebiscite to run in the seat of Cook prior to the 2007 federal election.

He flatly denied claims made in recently revealed statutory declarations that he told local branch members that the party risked losing Cook if businessman Michael Towke was its candidate even though Mr Towke had beaten Mr Morrison by 82 votes to eight in the preselection vote.

Mr Morrison is alleged to have said voters would not supported a person of Lebanese heritage and that there were rumours circulating that Mr Towke was a Muslim

CANBERRA: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been forced to deny that he played the race card and peddled a scare about Muslims when in 2011 he called for the families of asylum seekers to pay their own air fares to attend the funerals of relatives drowned at sea while trying to reach Australia.

In December 2010 a wooden fishing boat carrying 89 asylum seekers was dashed on rocks at Christmas Island causing the drowning deaths of 50 people – 35 adults and 15 children.

Twelve of the victims were to be buried in Sydney which prompted Mr Morrison, then Shadow Immigration Minister, to publicly say the Gillard Government should not pay the cost of air fares for surviving family members to be flown from Christmas Island for the funerals.

At the time Mr Morrison questioned the cost, saying the funeral services could have been held on Christmas Island and that by holding them in Sydney and paying for other detainees to attend was poor judgement on the part of the then Labor Party government.

CANBERRA: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been forced to deny that he played the race card and peddled a scare about Muslims during discussions on the Coalition’s immigration policy by the then Shadow Cabinet in December 2010.

Mr Morrison repeated the defence he had previously made about his contribution to the discussion by claiming he was trying to “lower the fears about Islam and not elevate them”.

A number of news reports in 2011 said Mr Morrison had urged his fellow opposition frontbenchers to capitalise on the Australian electorate’s fears about “Muslim immigration”, “Muslims in Australia” and the “inability” of Muslim migrants to integrate.

His alleged comments and the failure by then Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to reject them outright was described by Labor figures as “grubby” politics and displayed a willingness to discriminate on the basis of religion.
