CANBERRA: The lengthy political career of Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is over following a stunning intervention by new Parliamentary Speaker Andrew Wallace.
After watching Mr Joyce’s “performance” in Question Time yesterday (at top), Speaker Wallace has had fitted state-of-the-art fingerprint identification pads, iris recognition software and a breathalyser unit that all must be activated simultaneously to unlock all entry doors to the Legislative Assembly chamber.
Members must return a breath alcohol reading of less than 0.25 to conduct business in the chamber. The 0.25 rate was set so a quorum could be achieved at least some days of each siting week.
It is understood Mr Joyce last had a BAC reading of under 0.25 when he was a relatively new Queensland Senator back in 2004 and before he discovered the very cheap Bundaberg rum prices in the Members’ Bar.
