The NSW State of Origin rugby league side is now the hot favourites with online bookies to win the second clash against Queensland at Perth Stadium next Sunday night and then take out the series in Sydney.
Despite losing the first clash at Suncorp Stadium several weeks ago, Brad Fittler’s Blues strengthened in the betting markets throughout yesterday and as The Bug went to press were at 6-4 to win next weekend. The Maroons, despite clearly being the superior side a few weeks back, have blown out to 6-1.
The money flowing for the Blues didn’t even abate after Fittler last night made seven big changes to his lineup.
“The money’s been pouring in for the Blues since Phil Gould wrote in the Sun-Herald that ‘the Queenslanders are perfectly placed to win Origin 11’,” a Sportsbet spokesperson told The Bug.
Maroons coach Kevin Walters admitted overnight that Gould’s prediction was “the kiss of death” for his side.
“Most of the boys couldn’t even bother coming out for yesterday’s training run,” he said. “I should have been angry but can you really blame them?
“At this stage, we’re still inclined to make the trip west for the game.”
Meanwhile in Perth, Optus Stadium officials stunned by plummeting ticket sales, especially north of the Tweed, have called on Peter Fitzsimons to tip the Blues “to balance the ledger”.
