Mayor explains Trump tower knockback

LOCAL GOVERNMENT:

GOLD COAST: Mayor Tom Tate says he is now able to detail the reason behind the scrapping of plans for a new Trump Tower at Surfers Paradise just months after the project was unveiled.

The project was announced in February by a local property developer and the Trump Organisation, which is owned by US President Donald Trump but operated by his sons Donald Jr. and the other one.

But this week the plans were abandoned with the US President’s unpopularity in Australia reportedly being blamed. (below)

But Mayor Tate today denied those reports, saying other issues had to a decision by the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) to reject the development application.

“The original plan for the new Trump Tower was for a 91-storey building including a 285-room hotel,” Cr Tate said.

“The Council looked at those plans and asked the developer and the Trump Organisation to go back to the drawing board and revise them.

“They came back with an updated design that expanded the tower to 210 storeys including 450 hotel rooms, plus a helipad that incorporated a Trump Golf Club driving range and clubhouse. (main picture)

“It also included a McDonald’s restaurant with solid gold arches and a solid gold statue of Donald Trump equivalent to around 60 storeys high.

“Because the new design would intrude into flight paths to and from the Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta, an aircraft warning light was rather cleverly included in the statue’s red MAGA cap.”

Cr Tate said a meeting of the GCCC this week considered the revised development plans in detail.

“We met for several hours and focussed only on this project,” he said. “But in the end we were forced to reject it because it just wasn’t gaudy or ostentatious enough to fit in with all the other developments we’ve been approving on the glitter strip.

“It just didn’t give off that Gold Coast vibe,” Cr Tate said.
