Trump gives Morrison key job

DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENTS:

US President-elect Donald Trump has made a stunning announcement by appointing former Australian prime minister Scott Morrison as Australia’s ambassador to the United States based in Washington DC.

There is yet to be an official response from the current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese but Australian government officials are believed to be examining the legitimacy of the appointment.

An Australian government source said it was at that event that Mr Morrison put forward the case for him to replace another former PM, Kevin Rudd, as Australia’s ambassador.

“Morrison has watched as Trump has appointed all sorts of loops and weirdos to various posts in readiness for becoming the 47th US President,” an insider said.

“He figured he might as well give it a shot, so he cosied up to Trump on New Year’s Eve and put the idea to him, bagging Kevin Rudd in the process and reminding Trump of the bad things Kevin had said about him when he was the 45th President.

“Naturally Trump warmed to the idea but needed convincing about the legality of a US President essentially making a decision that usurps the role of Albanese as the head of another sovereign nation.

“But Morrison was carrying a copy of the AUKUS agreement he negotiated while PM and pointed out the little-known clause that allows it to happen.

“He also told Trump that he, Morrison, was an expert on the technicalities of Australian political appointments, having secretly served in five ministries while also being PM.

“That’s all Trump needed to take his final decision – by that I mean running the idea past Elon Musk who told Trump Morrison was a practised, persistent, and expert liar, which swung the decision his way,” the source said.
