Bitter brawl at Bowen Hills LNP branch

STATE POLITICS:

An ugly verbal brawl has erupted overnight at the monthly meeting of the Liberal National Party’s Bowen Hills branch. (main picture)

The Bug has been told that a heated and ugly shouting match broke out at the meeting between the branch’s president and chief publicity officer Chris Jones and Opposition Leader David Crisafulli who had attended as guest speaker.

An LNP insider said the stoush came close to physical blows between Jones and Crisafulli, with Jones furious that the LNP leader earlier in the day had, in reality, largely backed the Premier’s stadium decisions by also declaring the Victoria Park new stadium a no-go.

“Jonesie couldn’t believe that David hadn’t capitalised on the groundwork he – Chris – had done on David’s behalf,” the insider said.

“The branch had settled on a solid line of attack on Queensland’s Labor Party Premier Steven Miles after he announced he was rejecting a recommendation by former LNP Brisbane lord mayor, Graham Quirk, to splurge billions of extra dollars on a new stadium for the 2032 Olympic Games at the near-city Victoria Park.

“Chris thumped the table and said that, as usual, he had gone out of his way to make sure that every edition of the branch’s newsletter, The Courier-Mail, was highly critical of Miles and every decision he makes.

“Chris acknowledged that he had prepared two version of the newsletter prior to the Premier’s most recent announcement – one bagging Miles for splurging more money on a stadium instead of cost-of-living relief and an alternative version bagging him for not spending enough on a new stadium.

“Having run hard with the second version Chris was naturally upset that David hadn’t taken steps to reinforce the message.”

The inside source said Jones shouted at the Opposition Leader: “You’ve virtually neutralised the issue for the October election, you stupid bastard. You’ve ditched another LNP bloke’s [Graham Quirk’s] review and recommendations and basically backed the Labor Premier’s decision to refurbish Lang Park for the opening and closing ceremonies and to rebuild the old Commonwealth Games stadium at Upper Mount Gravatt for athletics instead of wasting billions on a new stadium. Another review, for fuck’s sake! Really?”

The insider said at the branch meeting Jones had forcefully reminded Crisafulli of how the newsletters he’s been pumping out had blatantly ignored the fact that the Premier’s decision rightly preferenced cost-of-living relief over lavish sports facilities and was also a huge boost for athletics in our state and nation.

“Chris also ran through the baseless, loopy arguments his newsletters have been using to prop up the claims that the Mount Gravatt site is totally unsuitable,” the inside source said.

“For instance all of his recent newsletters have totally ignored the fact that there was absolutely no drama shifting crowds to and from the old Commonwealth Games site way back in 1982 – long before the bigger and better road links and a major busway were built almost along the fence of the site.”

“The meeting ended abruptly when Chris threw all the recent Courier-Mail newsletters across the table at David and told him to lift his game.

“This seemed to shock David who asked pleadingly if it meant Chris and his newsletters wouldn’t support him come October.

“But before storming out of the room Chris assured David that he could always count on his newsletter’s support no matter how useless, weak, and incompetent he was,” the insider said.

“A local LNP branch is still a local LNP branch after all.”
