McConnell’s successor found

WASHINGTON DC: The US Republican Party is believed to have settled on a replacement for its long-serving Senate leader Mitch McConnell who has announced his retirement from November.

The 82-year-old Kentucky Senator has served as the Republican Party’s majority and minority leader in the Senate for almost 20 years.

Known for his tough and uncompromising partisan approach, Senator McConnell helped former President Donald Trump implement his right-wing agenda. (main image)

Just one of his favours for Trump occurred a year before Barack Obama left the White House when McConnell used his Senate numbers to prevent the Democratic President from filling a vacancy on the US Supreme Court following the death of a right-wing judge.

McConnell justified the action by citing a previously unheard of principle which he said meant it was far too close to the election to fill the spot. The delay allowed Trump to appoint a right-winger when he won the 2016 election.

But when another Supreme Court vacancy occurred just months before the 2020 election, McConnell used his numbers again to rush through another right-wing Trump appointee.

The Senate Republican leader also vaguely criticised Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol insurrection but did not support his impeachment and voted to acquit Trump.

Capitol Hill observers say the Republican Party is understood to have decided on a replacement for McConnell if Trump wins against President Joe Biden at the November presidential elections and returns to the White House in January next year.

“It’s been a bit of a hard task to find a replacement for Senator McConnell,” one Washington insider said.

“But party scouts have located a small local anthropology museum in a little town in the backwoods of Kentucky where a fossilised human turd has been on display since it was first collected in 1942. (below)

“The Republican Party will be nominating it as Mitch’s replacement and they believe it will more than live up to his record of achievement in the Senate leadership,” the observer said.
