Award judges take no chances

Chair of the judging panel for The Bug’s Australian of the Year Award (AOTY), Morrie Bezzle, has confirmed that arrangements are being finalised to cater for the possibility that the trophy needs to be handed to a shortlisted nominee currently living overseas.

The winner of the prestigious accolade will be presented tomorrow at a special Australinvasion Day event.

Mr Bezzle, The Bug’s financial and investment advice columnist, (below) said the AOTY judging panel recognised that a win by the unnamed potential winner would generate special logistical challenges.

“I can’t name the potential winner in question but I can say that all of us on the judging panel don’t want to be caught flat-footed if this particular individual wins the gong tomorrow,” he said.

“We’re leaving nothing to chance and have been conducting rehearsals with a lookalike for the shortlisted individual at a particular business premises which I also won’t name. (main picture)

“The judges are acutely aware that if this particular person wins then there will be lots of Aussies, possibly tens or even hundreds of thousands, who’ll want to express their feelings directly to him.

“That’s why we have put in place a plan to fly him to Australia from where he is currently living and then have him located in a position where anyone who wants to show their feelings towards him can do so easily,” Mr Bezzle said.
