Spiralling fuel prices, possible catastrophic supply shortages, and the prospect of a global economic meltdown have prompted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to step up his efforts to encourage US President Donald Trump to end the war in Iran.
On ABC TV’s 7.30 program last night Mr Albanese was at pains to latch on to three benchmarks Mr Trump had previously outlined for the war to be declared as over.
“I note the President today has said that there has been regime change,” Mr Albanese told 7.30‘s Monday edition.
He said the President’s stated objective of wiping out Iran’s nuclear capability had also been met. So too had its ability to threaten global peace.
“I think the President is in a position whereby he can claim that he has achieved the objectives that he set out to,” Mr Albanese said.
But to emphasise his point and hopefully convince Mr Trump to end the war, Mr Albanese went a step further this morning.
Early this morning he flew out of the Fairbairn Air Base in Canberra on an RAAF plane to land and landed on an aircraft carrier off the NSW south coast to declare “Mission Accomplished” in Iran. (main picture)
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said because the Royal Australian Navy did not have an aircraft carrier in its fleet one had to be borrowed for the event.
“Luckily China has a couple of aircraft carriers sailing just off the coast right now – some of more than 50 such vessels in the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s fleet,” the spokesperson said.
“So we asked China very nicely if we could land the PM on its deck and they readily agreed.
“The PM had earlier thought he might impress President Trump more if he used one of our new AUKUS nuclear submarines for the event.
“In the end that wasn’t feasible because of the subs’ projected delivery timelines, but we are definitely keeping it open as an option for a follow-up event if the war drags on for as long as some experts are suggesting.”
The PMO spokesperson said there was so far no time set for Mr Albanese to return to Canberra.
“In fact the Chinese haven’t even set a day, or indeed a month, for his and the RAAF crew’s likely release…. I mean return,” the spokesperson said.
