CANBERRA: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been forced to change tack swiftly while delivering remarks at a news conference called to discuss the granting of asylum to five members of the Iranian women’s soccer team.
Mr Albanese began the news conference in a stern and combative style. (at left in main picture)
“I have nothing but contempt for these women,” he said to the surprise of assembled reporters. “As my mother would say: You make your bed, you lie in it.
“My government is doing nothing to assist them. They deserve no sympathy and will face the full force of the law when they return home….”
At that point a prime ministerial aide approached the lectern and whispered in Mr Albanese’s ear.
He then shuffled the speaking notes he had laid out on the lectern, adopted a more relaxed and pleasant appearance and, while smiling broadly, continued his remarks. (at right in main picture)
“We welcome to our nation these five brave young Muslim women,” he said.
“My government has done all it can to get them to stay here in Australia and we remain willing to do the same to the remaining members of the team.
“They’re safe here and they should feel at home here rather than in the hell hole country they’ve come from.
“As my mother would say: Leave no one behind,” he said while fighting back tears.
“I know the difference that governments can make in people’s lives because I lived it. Mum lived it. It’s what motivated me to get into politics.
“To help people. To make life better for people. To make sure no one is left behind.
“Have I mentioned previously that I was brought up by a single mum in public housing?” he asked as the assembled media pack emitted an audible groan.
“We had it really bad. I mean, the place we lived in was no better than some Syrian detention camp….,” Mr Albanese mused as reporters gradually left the news conference while the PM continued his remarks with the assistance of a PowerPoint presentation featuring old family photos.
