V’Landys pushes game changes

LAS VEGAS: Chair of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), Peter V’landys, says 2027 will again see Australia’s NRL season premiere in Las Vegas in his campaign to convert American sports fans to the game.

Mr V’Landys (main picture) has been the driving force behind the US-based season launches since 2024.

“The just concluded 2026 season opener here in Las Vegas showed yet again that we are making headway in the US market,” Mr V’Landys said.

“However, next year I am planning some minor tweaks to make the Australian NRL competition even more attractive to American sports fans.”

Mr V’Landys would not reveal details of the proposed but an anonymous ARLC source who leaked details (below) said the planned changes included kitting out NRL players in helmets with face guards and uniforms with large shoulder pads, and tighter-fitting shorts with full length leggings.

“Peter – that is, V’Landys – is also looking at changing the NRL match length from 80 minutes with a 10-minute half-time break changed to four 15-minute quarters with a 12-minute half-time.

“He’s also suggesting a change to the scoring system by having goals worth six points rather than the current four points.

“Oh, and he also plans to stop calling them ‘goals’ and instead use the term ‘touchdown’ even though a touchdown doesn’t mean you have to touch anything down.”

“He’s also going to insist that the National Rugby League be renamed the National Football League. It will have really convoluted game rules similar to American gridiron where playing veterans of decades experience still don’t have a fucking clue how it all works.

“These are just the first few changes he wants to put into effect before the 2027 Las Vegas games.

“After that he wants to ensure that playing fields have more distance and length markings – so they look sort of like a grid,” the source said.
