MIDDLE EAST WAR:
WASHINGTON DC: President Donald Trump has finally clarified his reason for having US troops join with the Israeli Defence Force to wage war on Iran.
Since launching the attack at the weekend the Trump administration has been unclear on what imminent threat Iran posed that might have justified an otherwise illegal military strike against it.
But at a White House briefing Mr Trump clarified the reasons, saying his decision-making process which led to the start of the Iran war at the weekend focussed heavily on the fact the rogue Middle Eastern state was a WMD source.
“There is no doubt that worry of mid-term defeat weighed heavily on my mind when deciding whether to strike Iran or not,” he said.
“Really, there was no other option for me as a Nobel Prize-worthy peacemaker other than to start this war.”
At the briefing Mr Trump credited his press secretary Karoline Leavitt for devising the name Operation Epic Fury for the current war on Iran.
“I can’t take credit for the name,” Mr Trump told reporters at a White House briefing. “Karoline came up with the name after running through a number of alternatives. (main picture)
“So I may need to share one of my many, many Nobel Peace Prizes with her when they arrive which I would think should be any day now.”
The President’s comments also gave a hint about the likely length of the war against Iran.
So far the Trump administration has been unclear about the conflict’s potential duration but the President offered a more precise timeline when an Australian reporter threw him a hypothetical question about how any nuclear submarines Australia is due to buy under the AUKUS agreement might have been deployed in the Iran conflict.
“That’s not necessarily a hypothetical, you know,” Mr Trump replied. “I think the new subs will be delivered Down Under in plenty of time for our Aussie allies to join in with the US and Israel in this war.”
