CANBERRA: A simple misinterpretation by an Australian Federal Police (AFP) officer has been blamed for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being unnecessarily evacuated multiple times since earlier this week when a telephoned threat saw him spirited away to a secure but undisclosed location. A spokesperson for the AFP said the latest incidents were not related to the original threat linked to the planned tour of the Chinese dance troupe Shen Yun which is banned in China by the nation’s central government for allegedly being opposed to the communist regime.
“In recent days the AFP officer working at the guard post at The Lodge’s front gate has received a number of phone calls from people identifying themselves as Labor voters,” the spokesperson said.
“Without fail all callers have asked to be put through to the PM but, in line with normal procedures, the officer concerned has told them it was not possible for them to speak to Mr Albanese but they could leave a message.
“Again, without fail, all callers have said they wanted to ‘put a bomb under Albo’ which the officer has immediately interpreted as an actual threat to the PM’s safety, prompting him to order Mr Albanese’s evacuation.”
The AFP spokesperson said an analysis of the phone calls, all of which had been recorded as part of The Lodge’s security system, identified a mistaken belief by the AFP officer which had caused the PM to be evacuated needlessly.
“The officer immediately hit the panic button, literally, on hearing the word ‘bomb’, but failed to listen to the rest of what each caller said,” the AFP spokesperson said.
“For instance, one caller said they ‘wanted to put a bomb under Albo for trying to out-Hanson Pauline Hanson in his denigration of the so-called ISIS brides while ignoring the plight of their children who apparently he is willing to see languish and be radicalised in festering refugee camps’.
“Another caller said he wanted to put a bomb under Albo for hob-nobbing with – and I quote – ‘that genocidal ethnic cleansing apologist for kid killers Israeli President’ who visited recently.
“Then a caller said as a Labor voter they wanted ‘to put a bomb under Albo’ first for describing Grace Tame as ‘difficult’ when he could have just as easily called her ‘tough’ or ‘insistent’ or ‘courageous’ or ‘brave’ and then for his pissweak excuse claiming he was describing her life experience.
“That caller was followed by another saying they wanted to ‘put a bomb under Albo’ for calling Grace Tame ‘difficult’ while presumably finding ‘the blood-soaked apologist for kiddie killers Israeli President a real breeze to deal with’.
“The AFP analysis shows there was no real reason for the PM to be evacuated, but we are now taking legal advice on whether the callers have breached recently enacted federal hate speech laws. If so, arrests will follow,” the spokesperson said.
