Albo’s claim puzzles Herzog staffer

HERZOG LECTURE TOUR:

CANBERRA: Staff of President Isaac Herzog admit to being puzzled about comments by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese justifying his invitation for the Israeli head of state to visit Australia.

Yesterday in parliament Mr Albanese attempted to put a positive spin on the so-far divisive visit by saying if it had not occurred he would not have been able to raise with President Herzog the need for transparency and accountability by Israel over the killing of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom.

“Look, I shirtfronted Mr Herzog. You bet you are, you bet I did,” Mr Albanese (below) said.

But a senior aide to Mr Herzog conceded that the same conversation between the two leaders could have taken place at any time since April 2024 when Ms Frankcom and six other staff of World Central Kitchen were killed by an Israeli Defence Force (IDF) drone strike while in a convoy being used to feed starving Palestinians in Gaza.

“I guess Mr Bendthekneesie … I mean Albanese could have picked up the phone and spoken directly to the President at any stage since that World Central Kitchen convoy deliberately collided with an IDF rocket,” the aide said.

“Maybe he could have organised a Zoom meeting, like we do quite regularly including on this trip when the President regularly keeps Prime Minister Netanyahu informed of developments.” (main picture)

But the aide did confirm that President Herzog would act on Mr Albanese’s request.

“Sure, we’ll look into that April 2024 incident but you have to cut us some slack,” the aide said.

“I mean so far we’ve got about 73,600 deaths in Gaza caused by the IDF including about 250 aid workers.

“That’s going to take some time to ensure the necessary transparency is applied before we can totally exonerate ourselves in every single case, especially the 20,000 or more Hamas child terrorists whose antisemitic tactics deliberately put themselves in harm’s way,” the aide said.
