NSW POLITICS:
SYDNEY: NSW Premier Chris Minns says police officers caught on camera pummelling fully restrained and prone protestors at Monday night’s anti-genocide rally outside Sydney’s Town Hall will immediately be directed to undergo retraining.
Mr Minns also committed to “throw the book” at two specific officers.
His move followed numerous incidents at the protest in which police used heavy-handed physical tactics to disperse crowds after some at the rally declared they would breach their protest permit to march to Parliament House a few blocks away.
In a news conference this morning, Mr Minns (suddenly far right and at right in main picture) focussed specifically on one incident in which two police officers were caught on video punching a young man dozens of times including striking him in his head. (at left in main picture)
“As soon as I saw that vision I called the Police Commissioner and demanded a full explanation,” the Premier said.
“The Commissioner advised that the two officers had been very concerned about the protestor who looked to them to be somewhat out of sorts.
“They immediately took action to lie him flat and administer a gentle, soothing reiki massage to transfer their universal energy to him.
“But, as the Commissioner told me, the officers unfortunately did not employ the traditional light touch and sometimes no-touch technique that true reiki demands.
“The Commissioner undertook to order both officers to undergo urgent retraining in reiki massage at a specialised Blue Mountains holistic retreat and spa as soon as this weekend.”
Premier Minns said he was determined to take the matter further.
“I’ll personally be throwing the book at both officers,” he said.
“Specifically, it’s the book Reiki: The Ultimate Guide by Steve Murray (below) who the Commissioner says is a bit of an authority on that and other alternative therapies,” Mr Minns said.
