WASHINGTON, DC: US billionaire Jeff Bezos has defended planned mass sackings and revamped editorial priorities at his national newspaper The Washington Post.
Mr Bezos (pictured below after briefing US President Donald Trump on the changes) said the “new” Washington Post would better reflect today’s America.

“For starters we’re getting rid of a lot of deadwood such as most of our journalistic staff,” he said.
“In particular we’ll be eliminating a lot of editorial jobs in our political reporting teams, but at the same time we’ll be recruiting some big names to replace them.
“For instance I have been able to personally put in train a plan suggested to me by the President himself to sack our existing White House reporters and replace them all just with his press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
“I’m very grateful that the President is willing to share Ms Leavitt who will continue in her White House role while writing for us.
“It makes perfect sense because the most valuable commodity a political reporter can have is inside information, and who better to possess inside information on the White House than the White House press secretary?
“The same goes for our revamped coverage of defence issues, or war issues as we’ll now call them.
“I’m equally pleased that Pete Hegseth is coming on board as our chief defence,… I mean our chief war correspondent.
“Pete’s a former reporter for Fox News so nobody can accuse him of not being fair and balanced.”
Mr Bezos said in line with the staffing changes he had also made subtle adjustments to the newspaper’s masthead and motto.
“I originally wanted to rename the paper The Washington Post-Trump, but the President confidentially gave me some very convincing reasons not to do that,” he said.
