ROYAL COMMISSION:
Former federal treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, is making a last-minute bid to dump former High Court judge, Virginia Bell, as head of the royal commission into the Bondi Beach shootings and antisemitism.
Prior to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s announcement yesterday of his decision to establish a royal commission, Mr Frydenberg publicly opposed Justice Bell without specifying reasons.
“All I will say is that I believe my preferred commissioner, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, (main picture) is far better qualified to undertake the type of inquiry we need and to deliver the findings we want to see,” Mr Frydenberg told reporters accompanying him on what he explained was “simply a spontaneous walk” that took him through busy shopping precincts in the inner-Melbourne suburbs of Balwyn, Deepdene, Canterbury, Camberwell, Malvern, Toorak, Hawthorn, and Kew.
“It’s not too late for the Prime Minister to drop Justice Bell and instead appoint Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mr Frydenberg said while stopping to introduce himself and shake hands with local shoppers.
“It would be a simple matter for the PM to have Mr Netanyahu sworn in as an Australian judge and appoint him to head the royal commission.
“I have been discussing this idea with a panel of noted independent legal experts (below) and they are all in furious agreement with me.

“We all believe that Mr Justice Netanyahu would be a stand-out candidate for the job and once again Anthony Albanese will be playing politics and showing a lack of leadership – and of course being antisemitic – if he rejects my plan.
“As I have said repeatedly, for some unidentified reason we have seen antisemitism grow since the October 2023 Hamas attack on innocent Israelis.
“While not pre-empting his findings, I know Justice Netanyahu would identify the sole reason for that as being the Albanese Government’s antisemitic vote at the antisemitic United Nations to recognise an antisemitic Palestinian state. I’m at a complete loss to come up with any other events in the past two years that might explain it.”
During his lengthy street walk Mr Frydenberg stopped several times to stress to passers-by that Mr Albanese was playing politics with the royal commission.
“It’s shocking that he is doing that,” Mr Frydenberg said to one local.
“That’s why I’m running, … I mean walking – yes, walking not running – to let voters … I mean to let locals know how disgracefully Mr Albanese has handled this issue,” he added.
