Lawyers fear rushed probe

THE LAW:

Australian lawyers say they fear a royal commission into the Bondi Beach shootings may be rushed.

A range of practitioners attending Sydney’s permanent lawyers’ picnic including barrister Bill Ofcosts (main picture) expressed their view that it was important that any royal commission take an in-depth examination of the causes of antisemitism.

“We shouldn’t rush any royal commission,” Mr Ofcosts said. “It must be allowed to take many, many months, probably even a year, or maybe close to two or more to do its work.”

Mr Ofcosts said a royal commission should if possible be open-ended.

“That’s despite the fact that if it’s doing its job, it will take about 10 minutes or less to pinpoint the cause of any rise in antisemitism in the past two years in Australia, because the answer is obvious,” he said.

“The blame for radicalising antisemites can be traced directly back to the genocide in Gaza committed by murderous war criminal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Everyone can see that he and his gang of thugs in the far right-wing Israeli Government sparked the rise in antisemitism by murdering more than 70,000 Palestinians including more than 20,000 innocent children, and by persecuting Palestinians in the West Bank, and by doing all they can to block and destroy moves for a Palestinian state.

“All that is in line with the old legal principle, manifestus sicut testiculi canis. Or put another way, it sticks out like dog’s balls.

“But that’s no excuse for rushing a royal commission. Lawyers like me must be fee, .. I mean free to represent our clients at the commission for as long as possible.

“If the royal commissioner wants an extension of time, he or she must be given one.

“We simply can’t afford a short, sharp royal commission, and by ‘we’ of course I mean lawyers.

“As the old saying goes, justice delayed is justice denied. But in the case of any royal commission into any matter at an time, justice rushed will be just us denied.”
