Academic slams media’s Bondi bias

MEDIA NEWS:

A leading journalism academic has blasted Australian media outlets, especially News Crap Australia, for their selective reporting and editing of comments by Israeli and Jewish community representatives and supporters since the murderous Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

Professor Henny Jonningham (main picture), chair of the Combined Universities’ Newswriting Tribunal, said she had stayed silent for the past fortnight while observing news coverage of various people’s reaction to the killings but could do so no longer.

“Today’s front-page stories in News Crap outlets (main picture) are the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Professor Jonningham said, adding that she hoped the expression about doing physical harm to an animal native to the Middle East was not antisemitic.

“Once again News Crap Australia runs stories designed to put pressure on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to call a royal commission into the Bondi killings.

“But once again the stories omit what I am certain must be key comments made by those seeking such a probe.”

Professor Jonningham said today’s stories and comments after the Bondi attacks by community leader, politicians, and ex-politicians such as Josh Frydenberg invariably referenced a “rapid rise in antisemitism” in the past two years.

“The News Crap stories today and an item running this morning on ABC Radio News cite the rapid rise of antisemitism ‘in recent years’,” she said.

“But once again, the stories do not go on to explain that the most significant driver of antisemitism in those past two years has been the genocide inflicted by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the Palestinian people in Gaza and elsewhere in places such as the West Bank.

“Deliberately engaging in the ethnic cleansing of more than 70,000 people including more than 20,000 children must have a role in radicalising antisemites and terrorists.

“I am 100% certain that people calling for a royal commission all recognise that and must have included that fact in their comments calling for a royal commission.

“I am equally sure that those same people want a royal commission because it could examine at great length and in great detail the link between the Gaza genocide and the role it plays in radicalising those who engage in antisemitism or, even worse, attacks such as the once that occurred at Bondi.

“Yet News Crap Australia, the ABC and other media outlets have clearly been selectively editing out those statements by those calling for a royal commission.

“Even Josh Frydenberg, in his speech at Bondi, talked about the rise in antisemitism in the past two years. I’m sure someone as honest as he is would have then gone on to make the link with the Gaza genocide.

“But his comments as reported in the media did not contain any such reference, and – while I do not wish to engage in conspiracy theories – even a so-called video recording of his entire speech contained no such reference which makes me think it may have been an AI creation.

“Media outlets are deliberately sanitising comments to remove reference to the Gaza genocide’s link with any rise in antisemitism. That dishonest treatment of comments by those seeking a royal commission must stop,” Professor Jonningham said.
