Sneak peek of ex-PM’s portrait

CANBERRA: Following the unveiling yesterday of the official portrait of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, Australians have been given a sneak preview of the artwork that will memorialise his successor, Scott Morrison.

The man believed to be the nation’s current Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, yesterday formally revealed the portrait of Mr Turnbull which will hang in Parliament House along with images of his predecessors. (below)

Mr Morrison’s portrait has been executed by little known self-taught Point Piper artiste, Syd Harbour-Mansion. (main picture)

Mr Harbour-Mansion said he believed his non-traditional portrait captured Mr Morrison’s character perfectly.

“I know it is unusual to paint former PMs with two faces, but I believe in this case it is very appropriate,” he said.

“So too is the headwear I chose to paint on the cun… I mean, on Mr Morrison which perfectly captures the level of his intellectual prowess.

“I was very pleased to be advised that I had been chosen as the official portrait artist for our nation’s most recent previous prime minister.

“In fact I got very, very excited when I read the letter commissioning me, but I admit that my level of excitement reduced somewhat when I realised that I was being asked to execute just a likeness of him, not the real thing,” Mr Harbour-Mansion said.

He said Parliament House staff had advised that the Morrison portrait would join others in the public exhibition area of the Member’s Hall on the first floor of the building.

“I’m afraid their choice of hanging space is final, even though I urged them to hang Morrison in one of the Parliament’s public toilets.

“I amended that request to ask for just his portrait to be hung in a toilet, but the staff insist on the Member’s Hall,” Mr Harbour-Mansion said.
