PERTH: Heavy police protection remains in place here for Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes after numerous death threats were reportedly made against both men overnight.
The Bug understands the England Ashes coach and the side’s captain remain in secure lockdown at their hotel with dozens of uniformed and plainclothes coppers charged with keeping them safe after England spectacularly lost the first Test in just two days by eight wickets.
McCallum and Stokes created the Bazball approach to cricketing tactics back in 2022, a philosophy that batsmen in particular go hard and go often to put opposing bowlers off their line and length, allowing for fast-scoring and dominance. Baz is McCullum’s nickname. It’s apparently worked some times.
Police will not elaborate on who they suspect for the death threats but The Bug has been told people in the fast food service industry might indeed be the culprits, but the WAAOMPSR&HDR – the West Australian Association of Meat Pie, Sausage Roll and Hot Dog Retailers – has denied any involvement whatsoever by its members.
“Although you wouldn’t blame them if they were,” an association insider admitted. “Some of our members face financial ruin given the tonnage of top quality fast food they’re going to have to dump. At least those outlets flogging overpriced warm and mid-strength piss can keep their stocks on their books and make a bob later.”
