Last week I was pleased to attend ABC TV’s 2026 showcase launching its program line-up for next year which includes some very intriguing offerings.
ABC managing director, Hugh Marks, (main image) opened the event by declaring that the 2026 slate would include more than 100 new and returning programs.
But I must admit I was given the distinct impression that budget constraints continue to play a major role in decision-making by the national broadcaster’s executives and program makers.
For example, Mr Marks trumpeted the fact that the ABC would be broadcasting a lot more locally made TV drama next year.
But the “new” program leading its effort turns out to be reruns of its 1960s early evening soap opera Bellbird about the lives and loves of citizens in an Australian rural town. (below)

Similarly, Mr Marks touted a “boost” to “highly entertaining” adult quiz programming which appears to be limited to the purchase from Network Seven of its back catalogue of Bob and Dolly Dyer’s Pick a Box. (below)

Similarly, a new show to air on the ABC’s dedicated children’s entertainment channel – described by Mr Marks as a “prequel”‘ to Tom Gleeson’s much-watched Hard Quiz Kids – will be limited to a rescreening of the 1964 season of Quiz Kids, (below)

Mr Marks was at pains to talk up an “innovative” program that would cater to what he called “a growing demand for lifestyle, wellness, and healing content”.
I am not personally aware of such a growing demand and a preview of the new Colour Therapy – which will run for up to six hours a day – looked a lot like the ABC test pattern. (below)

I also harbour some doubts about the production values of a new reality TV series Mr Marks talked up at the ABC showcase.
He said the new show, called Big Aunty, was the national broadcaster’s response to Network Ten’s relaunched Big Brother series.
But to me it looked suspiciously like a live feed from the ABC’s own building security cameras at its Sydney headquarters. (below)
