CANBERRA: Liberal Party leadership aspirant Andrew Hastie has agreed with Opposition Leader, Ssussan Ley, (main picture) that she will still be heading the party by 2028.
When contacted early this morning, Mr Hastie supported the claim made by Mss Ley in an interview on ABC TV’s 7.30 last night.
The former Australian Army soldier and WA MP said: “Yes, I reckon by 2028 Ssussan will still be leader.
“After all it’s only 06:50 right now,” he added. “So the day is still young.”
Meanwhile others in the federal Liberal Party say if Mss Ley was deposed as leader, the party should not fear losing female voters.
“We have a good story to tell when it comes to sheil… I mean women leading our party,” said the senior MP who asked to remain anonymous.
“This morning’s decision by the Victorian branch of our party to replace its leader Brad Battin with Jess Wilson lends weight to my argument.
“Jess becomes our party’s third female leader at the state and territory level and joins the NT’s Chief Minister, Lia Finocchiaro, and ACT Opposition Leader, Leanne Castley, as Country Liberal and Liberal Party leaders.
“If rumours are true, and NSW leader Mark Speakman is dumped in favour of that pretty young thing whose name I can’t recall right now, then that will mean 50% of our party’s state and territory leaders are chick… I mean, are women.
“So who the hell needs quotas, I ask you?” the MP said.
The anonymous MP conceded that his argument might be weakened by suggestions that some MPs in today’s Victorian Liberal Party meeting inadvertently helped dump Mr Battin because the ballot papers had listed his challenger as “Wilson, Jess”.
