LONDON: His Majesty King Charles III has restored to the former Prince Andrew one of the honours stripped from him last week.

I am told by my Buckingham Palace sources that Her Majesty Queen Camilla was instrumental in having the King reverse his own decision to remove the now Mr Mountbatten-Windsor from the list of gentry who are members of the exclusive Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The honour is strictly limited to 24 members at any one time and includes His Majesty himself and his heir, the Prince of Wales, and members wear specific robes and headwear and a symbolic garter.

“Her Majesty the Queen advised the King to restore his brother to the Order but to update the garter he will wear,” a Buckingham Palace source told me.

“Her Majesty took a special interest in this matter because she has a daughter who is an adult now but also among her grandchildren are two young girls.

“In line with her wishes, officers from Scotland Yard bestowed on Mr Mountbatten-Windsor the updated garter at a small and very brief ceremony at Windsor Castle.” (main picture)

My sources tell me that Mr Mountbatten-Windsor initially complained about the new garter, saying its modern design was nothing like the one he was previously entitled to wear.

But, I am told, Her Majesty the Queen was in no mood to hear his complaints.

“Suck it up sweetheart,” Her Majesty said while advising him that she would personally perform an additional element of the installation ceremony which apparently included her drawing back deeply on an unfiltered Pall Mall cigarette, blowing smoke in the face of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, and flicking the cigarette butt at him.
