Strategists say Ley on the Right path

CANBERRA: A meeting of Oppossition Leader Ssussan Ley’ss strategy team has convinced her to stick to her current game plan despite plunging support for the federal coalition in the latest Newspoll.

Mss Ley’ss key advisers met with the Liberal Party leader (main picture) and decided her recent decisions including attacking Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s choice of t-shirts was the Right path for her to follow.

The Newspoll published by the national broadshit The Australian showed the coalition’s primary vote at 24% compared with just under 32% at the election. Labor’s primary vote was 36% – up from 34.6% at the election.

Mss Ley recorded a minus-33% net approval rating which was worse than her predecessor Peter Dutton’s minus-24% rating recorded before the May election.

Despite the low poll figures, the strategy meeting decided Mss Ley should maintain her current course.

“The meeting decided that Ssussan was Right to go after Albo and his Joy Division t-shirt and for her to attack our ambassador to the US and former PM Kevin Rudd only to back away soon after,” a source familiar with the discussions said.

“Her advisory team also stressed on Mss Ley the need to bow to the inevitable and scrap the Liberal Party’s crazy idea of continuing to embrace a net-zero emissions target of any description.

“The strategists around the table who’ve made her what she is today stressed that dumping net-zero was the Right thing to do and would have guaranteed appeal to viewers… err, I mean voters.

“When Ssussan argued that such a decision meant current teal seats in metro Melbourne and Sydney would never be regained by the Liberals, we all reminded her that those people didn’t watch… I mean, didn’t vote for us anyway,” the source said.
