CANBERRA: A leading federal National Party MP says decisions within the party to scrap a net-zero emissions target do not mean the party has abandoned a target entirely.
Queensland Senator, Matt Canavan, who spoke in support of the new position at Saturday’s National Party federal council meeting in Canberra while inexplicably appearing to have coal dust smeared across his face, (main picture) said the party’s new approach was being misrepresented.
Interviewed by The Bug over lunch after yesterday’s meeting and before today’s meeting of its federal MPs, Senator Canavan said: “We simply can’t support the Albanese Government’s target of net-zero by 2050.
“That doesn’t mean we’ve walked away from a target altogether,” he said while using his miner’s helmet lamp to closely inspect the plate of hot chips he had ordered.
“It also doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned our ongoing fight against climate change. I can assure you that we’ll continue to fight the very idea of climate change,” he added while using a 43cm coal pick to eat the chips.
“While we have decided to abandon net-zero by 2050 I am finalising my report for the party room which will contain a recommendation for us to embrace a more realistic target of net-zero by 5020,” Senator Canavan said while pausing his eating to grate a lump of coal over the plate of chips.
Meanwhile former party leader Barnaby Joyce was missing from the weekend meeting but agreed with its decision.
Mr Joyce has previously explained that he was taking “time out” from the Nationals because he did not agree with its current leader.
“My main point of disagreement with David Littleproud remains the fact that he isn’t me,” Mr Joyce belched while seated precariously on a footpath planter box.
