CANBERRA: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to be rushed to Canberra Hospital for treatment at the end of his RAAF VIP flight back to Australia later today following his collapse at the Dulles International Airport outside Washington. (main picture)
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office said Mr Albanese was reportedly in a stable condition and was being treated by medically trained RAAF officers on board the aircraft as it wings its way across the Pacific Ocean.
“The PM was in a buoyant mood after he left the White House following his meeting with US President Donald Trump,” the spokesperson explained.
“He was particularly happy with the President’s remarks about the AUKUS deal and Mr Trump’s firm statements that Australia would be receiving the new submarines for which we have already committed hundreds of billions of dollars.
“The President’s assurance were the cause of much celebration among the PM’s delegation after the White House event.
“But just after buying a few items at the airport duty free shop the PM was walking to his departure gate when one of his staffers mused out loud about the US President’s previous remarks on AUKUS.”
The PMO spokesperson said the staffer had reminded the Prime Minister of Mr Trump’s response back in February when asked about AUKUS during an Oval Office meeting with UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer.
On that occasion Mr Trump had replied “What does that mean?” after appearing puzzled by the reference, forcing the reporter who had posed the question to explain their reference to the Australian, UK, and US defence alliance.
“It was at that moment that the PM stopped in his tracks, let out what those near him described as a mixture of a sigh, a moan, a scream, and an expletive, before collapsing on the concourse,” the PMO spokesperson said.
“He was carried on board the RAAF plane and made comfortable and, just to be safe, he will be taken to Canberra Hospital for a full examination when he gets back here.”
