Academic releases alternative to AI

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

A Brisbane academic has launched what is described as “a simple, low-cost, forensic, and exceedingly accurate” alternative to artificial intelligence (AI) that can help “safeguard democracy”.

Professor Henny Jonningham (centre in main picture), chair of the Combined Universities’ Newswriting Tribunal, said her new system, dubbed IO for “it’s obvious”, was easy to use and pre-release testing showed it to be “pretty much 100% accurate”.

“I am confident that my new IO application by providing a factual basis from which to assess major social and political issues will vastly improve the currently low quality of public debate that threatens our democracy ,” Ms Jonningham said.

“IO enables users to make quick assessments of claims and counterclaims by applying their own intelligence rather than artificial intelligence.

“For example, a claim that ex-PM Tony Abbott’s new book on Australia’s history is just a literal far-right wing whitewash of the damage inflicted on First Nations can be quickly assessed by running recent advertisements for his book through my IO system. (below)

“If you do that you will quickly see several key points – first, it’s being promoted by Sky News, and second, it’s backed by the Institute of Public Affairs.

“Those two points alone verify the claim. But if further proof is needed a relevant third point is that the book was written by Tony Abbott.”

Ms Jonningham said pre-release testing of her new IO system had resoundingly disproved claims by people advocating the removal of fluoride currently being added to many local council water supplies.

“My IO system soon came up with an assessment that those people are dead wrong in their opposition to fluoride just by considering the state of their teeth, or in most cases their tooth,” she said. (below)

“Just this morning I used IO to assess a claim that the AUKUS pact is a good deal for Australia.

“All I had to do was feed in comments by US President Donald Trump overnight at his White House news conference with Prime Minister Albanese.

“The President lauded AUKUS and said Australia would definitely be getting new submarines under the deal – all of which prove it’s a dud deal and we’ll never ever see a sub despite shovelling billions of Australian dollars at the US military,” she said.
